We at Trinity Catholic Academy believe this new and creative idea of Blizzard Bags will motivate students to continue learning outside the classroom as they explore topics and complete projects that are interesting and created especially for them. The use of Blizzard Bags prevents the school year from extending into the summer. We are excited to try this new idea, and we hope you will help us make this new approach to snow days a success.
Frequently Asked Questions:
What is a Blizzard Bag?
Blizzard Bags are not physical bags, but rather assignments to be completed at home during snow days. Blizzard Bags are pre-made lessons and activities that allow students to work from home in the case of a school closing. The assignments will reinforce concepts and skills that have already been learned. TCA will notify you of a closing through our email system—Blackboard Connect. You can expect to see 3 days-worth of activities and lessons for their grade level on our website under Parent Resources, and then scrolling to your child’s grade.
Are Blizzard Bags mandatory?
Yes. In order for TCA to include a day off as a school day, students are required to complete their Blizzard Bags. This prevents the school year from extending further into the summer. As long as teachers have power at their homes, they will make themselves available by email from10am to 2pm to answer questions students may have.
When should I print my child’s Blizzard Bag activities?
Please print your child’s Blizzard Bag as soon as possible. In the case of inclement weather, power may be out and you may be unable to print. By printing ahead of time your child will have 3 days-worth of work ready to go. If you do not have access to the internet at home, please inform your child’s teacher so that a paper copy may be provided.
Should I print the entire file?
We recommend printing all 3 days at once. This way, in case of a power outage or inconvenience, your child has all 3 days ready to go. Printing the files and stashing them in a folder would best prepare you for a school closing.
When will Blizzard Bag work be due?
The work is due on the third school day after the snow day. In the case of more than one snow day in a row, the work for each snow day is due on the third school day after the last snow day. Students have the option of completing the Blizzard Bag work even before snow days happen in case they want to be free to make snowmen or need to go to child care.
What are the Expectations? Grades PreK and Kindergarten can expect to do a total of a half hour to one hour of work per day. Grades 1-8 can expect to do a total of 2 to 3 hours of work per day. The assignments will be graded the same as any other required assignment. Each student will be given guidelines and resources to follow, and teachers will be available during each Blizzard Bag snow day by email between the hours of 10am and 2pm to answer questions your student may have.
We hope that you will partner with us to make this initiative fruitful. If you have any questions, please contact your child’s teacher.
