Pumpkin Characters

During October the first graders noticed that pumpkins were everywhere! We decided to take the harvest theme and brought it into our class for some reading fun! As a family homework project, the children completed a really different book report by selecting a book and reading it with their families. They took special care to focus on the characters in the story and created that character on a small pie size pumpkin. The children were allowed to decorate, paint, glue things to and just get creative with their pumpkin and they completed a written book report as well.

When the children brought their pumpkins to school, they shared their books and their pumpkin characters with the kindergarten students. This activity gives first graders opportunity to practice important speaking and listening skills they need for both school and acts of daily living.
