Grade 4 has been learning how plants are classified. They learned that plants are separated into groups by the way they transport water and nutrients and how they reproduce.
To understand how plants transport water and nutrients, students read about vascular and non-vascular plants. Non-vascular plants do not have “tubes” to move water and therefore grow close to the ground. Vascular plants, on the other hand, grow tall and need a way to move water and nutrients to the top parts of the plant.
Students placed celery into a cup of colored water to find out what happens to the celery while it was left overnight. They came back to school to see that the colored water had move to the tops of their celery pieces.
The students were able to “dissect” their pieces and see the tubes inside the celery. They were quite excited to be able to peel the tubes out of the celery!
